East Bay Montessori's music program follows the Orff Schulwerk method, which works beautifully in partnership with the Montessori philosophy. Students focus on percussion-based instruments with a focus on rhythm and movement. We also incorporate group dance to bring in movement and to foster a fun, positive experience towards music for students of all ages. Our school hosts concerts in the winter and spring, and many other school events incorporate song and dance from the music program.
"How touching it is that man has this instinct, this joy and sentiment for music. Through the little children these things, art and music, remain forever with humanity – over time music has been recombined and developed throughout humanity." - Dr. Maria Montessori
Art class at East Bay Montessori is a supportive opportunity for our students to embrace their creativity, explore a wide variety of artistic media, and position themselves in our human history of creative expression. Projects typically start with prompts rooted in storybooks, art history, and seasonal observance. We focus on the kind of deep, close and long observation that artists and scientists use. Artists in our classes build both fine motor skills and abstract thinking capabilities that extend beyond the art room. Projects include drawing, painting, textile arts, sculpture, hand-drawn animation, collage, collaborative work, and more.
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of the Spanish language with our highly engaging and interactive Spanish classes! Our program is designed with a strong emphasis on relevant vocabulary and practical communication skills. The classes are tailored to boost students’ confidence in speaking a new language. Our curriculum gives students the opportunity for conversation and fun role-play activities that are crafted to reinforce students’ comprehension and speaking skills. We offer a review of some familiar structures and introduction to new ones that are essential for daily communication.
Theatre and live performance are an important part of the arts curriculum at East Bay Montessori. From TK, all students attend at least one live performance field trip each year and are also audience members for onsite student-led performances. These experiences in the audience lay the foundation for later participation in student-led drama groups and ultimately the Middle School production. Middle School students select a Shakespeare play to read and discuss, culminating in an abridged production developed and produced by the students. This opportunity to work together as a class to create something to share with the school is both rewarding for the Middle Schoolers as well as inspiring for their younger peers.
